This almost applies to most beliefs, I think, as many believe that when people die they then watch over us.
In Shinto cultures I think it is, this is very important to them that their ancestors are watching and so to do something dishonourable would disrespect the ancestors. We seem to have lost the fear in the west that anyone pays attention to what we do. Yet imagine if your great grandma is watching you next time you do something bad, that should stop you if believe it. I saw that on a documentary of how there was killing in one the schools in Japan; (I think it was). Yet all the people they asked, couldn't understand how anyone could do that in the east knowing their ancestor where watching and blamed the west for spreading its rubbish about death. | |

I presume this is to follow the teachings of the Dali Lama; we could do with getting some good quotes by him and the other Lama's.
